📝Description:
Most leaders think stress will kill them. Research says otherwise — and the difference between the people who thrive under pressure and the ones who burn out comes down to one thing: where they sit on the map of consciousness.
Kathy Motlagh, founder of Think Virtues, joins Steve to break down a framework for tapping into human potential that goes far beyond tactics and strategy:
- The "map of consciousness" and why operating above the level of courage changes how opportunities, people, and results show up in your life
- Why 80-90% of leadership is who you are and how you respond — not strategy
- The research from Stanford and Harvard showing stress doesn't kill you — your belief about stress does
- How to find your "genius" — the one gift only you carry, and why no mentor or best friend can hand you the answer
- The real difference between virtue signaling and actually leading with virtue
PS: Steve's favorite line from this one — "What you resist persists." Simple, but it reframes everything about how we handle pressure.

SPEAKER_02Thank you, Steve. It's a pleasure to be here.
SPEAKER_00We're talking, you know, I met you a few weeks ago. We were talking before the show about what you do. Let's dive into it because it's so unique and powerful.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so what we do, what we're very good at is really tapping into human potential. I believe through not just experience and research, but also working with people closely, that there is inherent power within each and every human being, each and every leader, each and every servant heart that has not been harnessed. And our job, my job has been to explore that, bring that out. So get to the core of each individual, bring that out so that they can shine, so they can shine through their genius. It's a journey that I personally took. It took me a number of years to accomplish that for myself. I've made a lot of mistakes. And getting to where I'm at today, where I'm serving people and really getting to the core of uh the authentic servant hearts that are out there is really what I live for. And it's incredible to see people light up. Uh, it's a journey that takes time. Uh, and everybody everyone's time frame is different. We could it could take two weeks, it could take a year. Uh, it just depends on where they're at. So we meet them where they're at and bring them, uh, walk them across, loving them through a process that's uh otherwise not that easy. And the and the result is that not only do they feel good, uh, but there's that they've harnessed that power. So they lead with that. So it's there's a there's a book, very good book that I read back in 2000 that started me on this path called Power versus Force. Uh so Dr. Hawkins, who had been studying and and researching consciousness, human consciousness, which is our the life force behind all of that, all that is. And uh he found that once people go up the map of consciousness to courage, level courage, which is 200 hertz, then they operate from a place of power, which means that they run into all the right circumstances, they get introduced to all the right people, and all their efforts are really compounded in such a way that things seem effortless, seamless. Um, and whereas if you're under uh courage in in uh ego energy, uh mostly things like pride, anger, anxiety, and stress and overwhelm, always being busy, that level of consciousness is forced. You have to force things to happen. Take things, it everything takes longer. You have to go through a lot of wrong people before you meet the right person. So, really, it's that that distinction. So, our goal is to really bring everyone to courage and above so that they can experience life the way that it was meant to be experienced, which is move from glory to glory. There's no downtime, you know. Uh, and another thing this does, this framework does is it gives the leader, the business owner, uh the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood very quickly. Uh so tapping into those types of things and their intuition increases and all of those things that are that are really uh you can't put a you can't put a price tag on that.
SPEAKER_00I like the scale because we talked about that before when we first met before the show. I like this so people can see it. It's like your weight. You know, if you're 200 pounds and then tomorrow you're 190, you've lost weight, okay. It gives you feedback, I guess. And that's kind of what this scale does, or that kind of does, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. So it's a it is a it's a way of uh really uh visually being to being able to see um, you know, where we are. Of course, we all go up and down the scale uh throughout the day because everyone gets upset, angry, stressed, but who you are in the face of those things is what matters. How quickly you self-regulate is what matters. And these are the critical skills that we impart to all the leaders we uh coach and train, because everybody's gonna have anxiety and stress. That doesn't change. It's your attitude towards it. It's how quickly are you able to self-regulate when someone makes you upset. It's how the world, how you view the world, how the world occurs to you. These are dynamics that in leadership is 90% of the game. 80 to 90% of the game is who you are and how you react to situations. And 10 to 20% is strategy, though we introduce strategy as well. But we put a big amount of emphasis on front on up front because who you are as a leader, how you show up, what your presence is in every situation matters most. Before you utter a word, people know where you're at. So it's very important for all leaders to be very keen about this concept because if they don't, they're missing 80% of the game.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and we're fallible, so we are gonna go up and down. And I love the regulator, that's so perfect. And to be a servant's heart, the name of this show, or a servant leader, you need this stuff because it starts with you, right?
SPEAKER_02Absolutely, absolutely, and and the more you tap into that power within you, the more you're able to serve.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's that's such a cool I love that. So the word genius came out a couple of times. Love the word, but scary for people. Explain genius what you mean by that, and the whole mission with it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there is a there is a a level of genius that every single that one gift that every single human has been gifted with. So most people go through life without knowing what that is, or searching their entire life outside of themselves for such a thing. But that answer also exists within. And the way to get to that it requires a lot of inner work and it requires taming our ego so that we stay out of judgment, criticism, comparison, and going through that exercise, that meaningful inner, deep inner work with people, it uh it results in them really honing into what is that one note I was meant to sing? What is my special gift? What is my message to the world? It doesn't exist outside of you. Your best friend doesn't know, your mentor doesn't know. That is an answer that's truly within every single soul. And uh and that's I consider that a privilege to be able to an honor to go through that with that process with each one of the leaders I work with because it's such an intimate process, and and if left alone, it gets it gets missed because we're too busy criticism, that inner chatter, that mental chatter that we all suffer from. I call it mental masturbation. It's you know, it's it's you know, we all have it in and we and it's mostly negative. So how do we turn how do we turn that around? How do we how do we rephrase things? How do we change our perception? These are all things that we need to be taught, and this is where neuroscience is really uh the research in that in that area is really helpful to us, and we draw from that into um into our training. For example, I'll give you an example. Uh, stress. Everybody's belief system that I have talked to. I don't know, you tell me maybe it's different for your audience, but most people think that stress will kill you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've heard that.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that's that's a that's a belief system where research shows that that's not true. There's a number of research that done by Stanford University, Harvard University. These are big establishments, very credible, eight-year research, 20-year research, 30-year research, and they divide people into groups. One group that is convinced stress will kill you, and one group who has a different perception about it, different, different way of looking at it. They think of stress as a springboard to action, so they they view stress as a positive thing. Okay, no big deal. I'm stressed, it's not gonna kill me. I just use the energy to do something productive. And you know, there's a bunch of other attitudes, but that's just one example. And they followed up years into the research. Many of the people who thought stress kills you were already dead.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_02Whereas the same people the same demographic, same amount of research, same amount of stress, these people's markers of health was better than the people who did not have a stressful life.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_02See how now so so knowing that I hope that you change your view about stress.
SPEAKER_00You just did because it makes sense to me. Because if I don't want to have stress, I try to avoid stress, I get more stress. Yeah, because that's what's happening. Exactly. Because what you resist persists. Yeah, interesting. That is audience. That's a game changer. That's a million-dollar comment right there. Run with that, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And it's it's a life changer, it's a game changer for the clients we work with because it's it's a truth, you know. As human beings, we're a lot more resilient, a lot more. We have the ability to have perseverance, we have the ability to face all kinds of things and come out of the come out the other side. Whereas we're we're conditioned and and thought and are the thought process that goes around negative emotions is that I'm this feeble, you know, this this core me, and uh, and all these things are happening to me. So we have a victim mindset uh and victim mindset upbringing. Um, and though I don't want people to to walk away from this, uh, from this interview thinking that they're they're weak or there's something wrong with them. And I want them to really have the opposite, that there's nothing wrong with you. That's our message. There's absolutely nothing wrong with you. Quite opposite. There's a genius within you, there's many talents within you, and you have the ability to do anything that you want. All you have to do is tap into that potential. And that's what we that's our what our work is all about. It's it's is teaching people how to do that. Because most people, if left alone, can't do it on their own. It's hard.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it reminds me of the stories we've heard of mothers lifting cars up because they're big their child's under there. There should be no way, but that's the power of us in this big old head. My big old head. My big old head.
SPEAKER_02Everyone can say that, right?
SPEAKER_00Everyone can exactly. I love big head. I mean he's got a big brain. I'm kind of smart. I'm a genius. Yeah, genius got me genius.
SPEAKER_02You are, you are a genius.
SPEAKER_00I am, and and as you're talking, you really get me excited here because I I know my geniuses or superpowers, some people call it. I like the word genius better. So virtues are talked about a lot in books speaking. What are really virtues?
SPEAKER_02So, virtues, the way we, and there's a lot of different ways to look at it. The way we uh or talk about it, the way we talk about virtues is that it they're all of our positive character traits and all of our positive emotions. So it's a it's a higher mind type of, you know, thinking virtues, the name of our company, it's a higher mind activity, it's a higher self way of being. So we don't look at virtues as a, you know, we look at it, of course, we approach it in all kinds of things, including coming up with our value systems and purpose, et cetera. But our main focus is to let people know that these virtues are inherent within each and every single person that walks this planet. Every single sentient being has uh has virtues. And it's just a matter of which ones, it's important though, to take the time to decide which ones you value most so that it can become kind of your mantra, kind of the way that you uh we use that once we hone into people's virtues, we use that to for them to have their to have their mind hooked on so that they can self-regulate easier.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02And to set their intentions for the day, for example.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I love what I'm hearing because what I'm the word that comes in my head is awareness, awareness of your genius, awareness of your virtues that you truly have, not that somebody's told me, Hey, Steve, you have this virtue of a servant heart. I know I have that because I live it every day. That's a powerful message, Kathy.
SPEAKER_02It's very powerful. It's it's that level of awareness, just as you mentioned, uh, is a level of knowingness. So we want to take people away from their beliefs and have them step into this level of self-awareness that's there that they know. For example, I don't believe in God, I know God, I know there is God. It's not a belief, it's a no, it's an inner knowing. So it's so it's that level of faith, it's that level of uh self-assuredness, it's that level of confidence. And when you get there, any kind of imposter syndrome, any kind of doubting yourself, any kind of self-worth goes away. And I'm not saying that the journey is easy because we have so many messages, so much programming around our not being worthy. I am, you know, people, most people, I have, in fact, I have yet to meet a person who has not struggled with that. Myself included. You know, I mean I think we're all uh we all struggle with that because it is something that we've been conditioned with. And I think that if we're truly honest with ourselves, we know that. And and the and the important thing is to once you acknowledge it, then you want to get rid of it because it's a falsehood. Each and every single person walking this planet is a precious expression of life.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so beautiful.
SPEAKER_02It's a magnificent expression of life. So it's so yeah, so we wanna we wanna get rid of the falsehood and step into the truth. Does that answer your question?
SPEAKER_00Tremendously. And I'm thinking social media, talking about somebody who'll knock down your virtues. I I'm not we're not gonna talk about you know good, bad, there's good, bad, and everything. But I know people because people dying by suicide are increasing because it's social media. That's just out there that you know audio check the facts because I've seen them, I've looked them up and done research. That's why I love what you do. Because now my awareness of my virtues and my genius, when somebody puts on there, oh, Steve is has a bad podcast. That's your opinion. I'm gonna still love you, but I don't believe that because my virtues know I have a silver card. Audience, this is so big. That's why I had her audience. You guys, I'm not gonna say that because I don't want to promote, but you need to talk to her. Um I just you just need to.
SPEAKER_02Well, here's go ahead. Yeah, so you brought up a very good point because there's, you know, what I don't want people to think, because a lot of people see our our brand and think that we're we're so we're this high, mighty, virtuous, and they do a lot of virtue signaling. Well, that you know, and that's not what it's about. You know, virtue signaling is not the same as thinking virtues. Thinking virtues is like thinking with a servant's heart. It's thinking with an open heart, thinking with an empathetic, compassionate, caring heart. You know, approaching the world like everyone we encounter is like us, is us. There's no difference between me and you in terms of thinking virtues is concerned. That's that's our that's our belief system. That's our that's our brand, that's exactly what our brand is all about. And we want people to think that about themselves, that there's that I have all of these wonderful qualities, all these that is just you can't put a price tag on it. And having that sense of worthiness at your forefront of existence enables you to really approach the world with a whole different perspective.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, let's go to the next level, which is consciousness. This all ties in there, I think. And you, of course, you're the expert. But how does consciousness impact our lives?
SPEAKER_02It's everything. Consciousness is all that there is. So consciousness is the life force behind all that is. So the map that we um you and I looked at when we first met is a map of consciousness. So, and anything under courage is considered falsehood, which means that it doesn't even exist in the field of consciousness, and anything above it, uh, every every uh every level above it is the is in the realm of truth. Uh, so God, for example, uh is in the realm of truth and power, ultimate power. Uh so you know, and we know that God is loving, God is forgiving, uh, and and so on. So it's not a religious teaching, but it is it it is in line with a lot of world's religions.
SPEAKER_00And what we talked about in our meaning before, I don't know if you remember, but I is here's the hope. Yes. If you're in falsehood and you're listening, you can go past courage and go, go, go with your help, or you know, I'd love for them to reach out to you. But that's the powerful thing I took from our first meeting was you gave me so much hope to help others to get to courage and above. Because anybody can do that, right?
SPEAKER_02Exactly. I mean, it's uh yeah, absolutely. And that's our message because we can't help everybody, although we want to help as many people as we can, but we want to pass the map pass along the message that there is hope. There is there is more than hope. There's absolute uh, you know, the the the potential for human growth and stepping into their power is limitless. And why waste your time in in looking at, you know, viewing yourself in in the realms of falsehood when it's not even true? It doesn't even exist in the field of consciousness. So there are, I mean, I don't want to discount negative emotions. We all feel them, and there there are frameworks to healthily process them. Uh, and it's critical that every single person does that. So I don't want people to ignore, uh, avoid, repress, or suppress their emotions. negative emotions there's that's one of the one of the things that we teach first in the very first day of working with us we teach you exactly how to process negative emotions in a in a way that consciousness research has proven to be effective and quick because we don't want to uh every negative emotion from fear to stress anxiety guilt shame can be processed if you have the right framework and that's what we introduced to people from the very beginning because that's critical.
SPEAKER_00Yeah it's like building a house you need a foundation the frame and that's what you do the house of virtue and genius and and it's so brilliant. We're coming to the end here I knew this would fly by I I'm gonna ask you to come back in a couple months we got to delve into this deeper but can I get a little personal with you I'd love to ask some personal questions. Sure. So who inspires you or who's your some of your mentors?
SPEAKER_02Oh my God so many people Dr. Hawkins was the one who inspired me the most uh in this journey of learning about consciousness Dr. James Doty inspires me greatly he's a neuroscientist and a researcher neurosurgeon uh I don't think he practices neurosurgery anymore but uh he's at Stanford University he studies compassion and care and has written several books there's so many Mary Heleno Yang who's a neuroscientist whose work I follow um you know I mean there's so many geniuses out there and I'm grateful for every single one of them.
SPEAKER_00And the audience I ask that question all the time too because successful people like Kathy in business and a service art always has mentors or or people that inspire them like I do. That's if one thing you want to take from this is find a mentor or inspire maybe it's Kathy I suggest to reach out. One other question it's a fun question so you're going out to dinner you've got a table of four you've got one of the chairs who dead or alive sits in those three chairs and why and what food would you order oh I would love to have dinner with Carl Jung the psychologist and Freud and David Hawkins together.
SPEAKER_02Oh and I would probably put in Socrates because I'm metaphor yeah this is your data we'll just put another chair in yeah so yeah Socrates I would love to have a conversation because I've studied virtues for over 20 years um and uh those were those were the uh the the the teaching Socrates himself never wrote anything but Plato and um Aristotle did and so I read all of their um thought processes around virtues and I and I find them fascinating because it's such a higher mind activity you know it's contemplating the different ways that they thought about it is is really powerful and important uh has been a really critical um part of my life yeah that's beautiful that what a great table love to be on that a fly on that wall to hear what those guys are talking about I want to thank you Kathy this has been a brilliant show you really inspired and motivated educated my audience and we'll continue doing that as people listen to this podcast. So thank you again how can people find you thank you Steve first of all I wanted to thank you for having me on your show. SPEAKER_00She just mentioned that and that's why she was on this show for many other reasons as well. So thank you Kathy and don't forget my TV show Together We Serve every Friday at 2 p.m Pacific 5 p.m eastern and on your YouTube which will come out in a couple of days comment on this podcast our podcast I'll get the message to her.
